Thursday, October 18, 2018

On Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 3:50 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad, Kent County EMS and the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched for the Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment. The location was reported as Maryland 289 / Quaker Neck Road near Oldtown Road. Arriving equipment found the crash scene on Quaker Neck Road a few hundred yards north of Oldtown Road. Additional information given indicated the car was off the road in the woods with a total of four (4) patients, with two (2) of those trapped in the vehicle.

The first unit from Chestertown VFC arrived on the crash scene at 4:02pm. The car was found off the road, overturned in a wooded area. Two patients had self-extricated and were ambulatory. Because of the attitude and position of the vehicle, the other two patients were still trapped within the vehicle. Both patients were alert and talking with emergency personnel. Maryland State Police Aviation was requested for air evacuation of the two trapped patients to a trauma center.

In order to facilitate access to and subsequent packaging and removal of the patients, it was necessary to saw a fallen tree log out of the way. At the same time, other firefighters worked to stabilize the vehicle with cribbing. Once all was ready, a hydraulic rescue tool was used to remove the driver’s door. At this point, emergency personnel were able to access the patients and, in turn, slide each one onto a backboard. From arrival on scene to complete extrication of both patients totaled eighteen (18) minutes.

Once both patients had been transferred to waiting ambulances, paramedics completed a detailed assessment and consulted with a Trauma Surgeon, via two-way radio, at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. It was determined the patients should be transported locally to the Universty of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown for evaluation, where upon Maryland State Police Aviation was canceled. Subsequently, all four (4) patients were transferred by ground to the hospital in Chestertown.

Chestertown VFC operated on this incident for one hour with twenty (20) personnel. There were no injuries to emergency personnel.
