Motor Vehicle Collision - N College Avenue, Chestertown

On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 8:53 am, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad and Kent County EMS was dispatched for the Motor Vehicle Collision involving a school bus. The Chestertown Police Department was on the scene, reporting the location as High Street and North College Avenue, an intersection known to long – time locals as Herzberg’s Corner. CPD was reporting the bus had children on-board, but there were no injuries. Emergency Services was dispatched at the request of the Kent County Board of Education.

Upon arrival, Emergency Medical Services boarded the school bus and checked all the children. They were found to be uninjured and in good spirits. The school board dispatched a second bus to the scene. The children were transferred to this second bus where they continued the very short journey to the Henry Highland Garnett Elementary School, one block away. The driver of the pick-up truck was treated at the scene and subsequently transferred to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown for evaluation.

During the incident, High Street was briefly closed, which disrupted the morning commute in this area. North College Avenue, between High Street and Calvert Street remained closed for the duration of the incident. Other then Chestertown VFC Engine 6 sitting by the corner, traffic on South College Avenue was not affected. Traffic control was handled by Chestertown VFC Fire Police personnel.

Chestertown VFC assisted and supported Emergency Medical Services. Once the vehicles had been removed from the scene, fire company personnel cleaned the roadway of vehicular debris resulting from the collision.

Personnel operated at this incident for (40) forty minutes. There were no injuries to emergency services personnel.
