Dwelling Fire with Rescue - Washington Avenue, Chestertown

Tuesday, March 5, 2019

On Sunday, March 3, 2019 at approximately 2:57 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, Kennedyville Volunteer Fire Company, Church Hill Volunteer Fire Company, Crumpton Volunteer Fire Company, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad and Kent County EMS was dispatched for the Dwelling Fire with Entrapment in the 800 block of Washington Avenue. This placed the incident near the Washington Square Shopping Center.

First arriving units discovered a two (2) story house with smoke showing to the exterior. The first crews entered with an 1-3/4" hose line. An aggressive interior search discovered one victim, which was promply removed from the dwelling and turned over to waiting EMS (Emergency Medical Services) personnel. This patient was transported to the University of Maryland, Shore Medical Center at Chestertown for treatment.

With reports of an additional missing person still inside the fire structure, search efforts were renewed. Several minutes later, this second fire victim was located and subsequently removed from the dwelling. Sadly, this patient was declared deceased at the scene.

Unfortunately, the first patient, transported to Chestertown Hospital, also succumbed to their injuries.

Delmarva Power was notified and responded to the scene. The electrical utilities to the structure were secured. The Maryland State Fire Marshals Office was notified. They dispatched a team which is conducting an Origin & Cause Investigation.

The Chestertown VFC extends our deepest, most heart-felt Thoughts & Prayers to the family and friends of the deceased!
