Brush Fire - Perkins Hill Road, Chestertown

Thursday, April 4, 2019

On Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at approximately 1:26 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched for a small brush fire in the 10000 block of Perkins Hill Road, in the Morgnec area of Kent County. The incident location was approximately 1/2 mile off Maryland 291 / Morgnec Road.

As Brush 6 was responding, from the vantage point of Maryland 291 & Hadaway Drive, they observed smoke in the distance. Brush 6 arrived with an active brush fire working along the ground underneath a stand of Pine Trees. The reel line from Brush 6 was deployed and began extinguishing the fire. With the arrival of the engine from Chestertown VFC, an additional hose line was placed in service. Several minutes after arriving, additional help was requested. Manpower and water was needed. The Kennedyville VFC, Crumpton VFC and The Community Volunteer Fire Company of Millington was dispatched. At 1:57 pm, the fire was declared under control. Crews remained on the scene mopping up hot spots. All equipment cleared the incident at 2:51 pm and was back at the station by 3:00 pm.

The burned area is estimated at approximately 3/4 of an acre, comprising mostly pine needles and small branches. With a "Red Flag Warning" in effect for the enhanced threat of wildfire, we're fortunate this fire wasn't bigger. We were helped by the fire burning downhill under a canopy of trees, where it was sheltered from the direct action of the wind. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

There were no injuries to civilians or emergency personnel. Twelve (12) personnel operated at this incident for one (1) hour, 34 minutes.

Photographs are available to the media for reproduction.
