Mutual Aid Special Operations Training

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

On Saturday, February 29, 2020, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company hosted a training event for companies in Kent County and Queen Annes County. We invited the Kent County (Delaware) Special Operations Team to give a brief presentation about their equipment and capabilities.

Wayne Hutchison, a member of the Cheswold (Delaware) Volunteer Fire Company and a team leader with the Kent County, Delaware Special Operations section, helped set-up this special program.

While local fire companies have the training, knowledge, expertise and equipment to handle many situations we're called to, there are some which exceed our capability. That is where the the Special Operations Team becomes important.

The team has special training and equipment to handle situations such as Trench (Collapse) Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, High Angle Rescue (situations involving complex rope operations either above grade or below grade), Swift Water Rescue and Animal Rescue. Animal Rescue involves removing large animals from situations in which they get themselves into, and are subsequently unable to get themselves out. In keeping with the ability of fire and emergency services to adapt and improvise when handling unusual calls for service, the Special Operations Team is available to assist in many different situations not listed here.

The Kent County Special Operations Team is available through a Mutual Aid request arrangement should we need their assistance.
