Motor Vehicle Collision - Chestertown Road, Chestertown

Sunday, May 10, 2020

At 6:14 pm on Saturday, May 9, 2020, the Chestertown VFC, Rock Hall VFC, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad and Kent County EMS was dispatched for the Motor Vehicle Collision with Rollover at the intersection of Chestertown Road (Maryland 20) and Brices Mill Road. First arriving units found a single vehicle (light truck) had crashed through a guard rail, then continued through several storage sheds at a retail location, destroying them. The vehicle then came to rest upside down.

Upon arrival of emergency assistance, the two occupants of the vehicle had already self-extricated from the remains of their truck. EMS evaluated both patients, which were packaged for transportation to a medical facility. "Package" means placing a cervical collar on the patient, then securing them to a backboard. This measure protects against aggravation of possible spinal injury. For further evaluation of injuries, one patient was subsequently airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The second patient was transported by ground to the University of Maryland, Shore Medical Center at Chestertown with non-life threatening injuries.

Because of severe damage to the vehicle, firefighters worked to disconnect the battery. Sometimes, because of damage to the vehicle, electrical systems are compromised and a fire ensues. Securing the battery eliminates this possibility.

Chestertown Road (Maryland 20) was briefly closed during this incident. Because of damage to the guardrail, the State Highway Administration / Maryland Department of Transportation was notified. They responded and placed traffic barrels in front of the damaged guardrail section.
