At 4:27 pm on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, the Chestertown VFC, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad (Ambulance & Boat), Kennedyville VFC, Church Hill VFC, Betterton VFC (Boat), Galena VFC (Boat), Rock Hall VFC (Boat) and Kent County EMS was dispatched to the vehicle overboard & sinking, at 98 Cannon Riverfront Grille, at the foot of Cannon Street.
Units arrived to find a passenger car had careened out of control, traveled across the boardwalk before crashing through the wooden railing on the footbridge between Cannon Street and High Street. The car came to rest nose down at a steep angle, with the front end in about 18 inches of water. The lone occupant and driver, a lady, was uninjured but required assistance getting out of the vehicle. Bystanders were able to assist the lady out of the car prior to the arrival of emergency equipment. She was evaluated by EMS but did not require medical treatment.
Because of damage to the railing, the foot bridge remains closed until repairs can be effected. Because of the situation and angle of the car, a large wrecker with sufficient boom reach was required to remove it. Phillips Garage of Sudlersville brought their large "rotator" recovery & tow truck to the crash scene. The car was lifted clear of the footbridge and placed on the parking lot adjacent to 98 Cannon Riverfront Grille. Subsequently, it was loaded and removed by rollback.
The crash is being investigated by the Chestertown Police Department. We operated at this incident for about 90 minutes.
