At 2:04 pm on Thursday, July 30, 2020, the Chestertown VFC, Kennedyville VFC, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad, Betterton VFC, Rock Hall VFC, Crumpton VFC, Church Hill VFC, and Kent County EMS was dispatched to the 10300 block of Augustine Herman Highway (Maryland 213) for the Motor Vehicle Collision with Unknown Injuries. The crash location was between Hopewell Corner (Maryland 213 & Maryland 297 – Suds & Soda) and Hassengers Corner (Maryland 213 & Maryland 561 – Chestertown Animal Hospital). The precise location is locally called “Goose Hill”.
Units arrived to find a two (2) vehicle “Head-On” type Motor Vehicle Crash with two patients. One patient was found to be pinned in their vehicle. Using hydraulic rescue tools, this patient was quickly extricated. The patient was subsequently airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The condition of this patient is not known. The second patient was evaluated by EMS and declared deceased at the scene.
As a result of this incident, Augustine Herman Highway (Maryland 213) was closed for approximately four hours. The Maryland State Police Crash Reconstruction Team responded to assume responsibility for the investigation.
Two firefighters, feeling the effects of heat-related illness, were transported to the University of Maryland, Shore Medical Center at Chestertown for evaluation.
