On Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 7:33 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched as part of a multi-company assignment to the Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment, Morgnec Road (Maryland 291) and Perkins Hill Road. The crash was reported as Head-On.
First arriving units found two vehicles, one with severe front-end damage, at the scene. There was no person(s) associated with this heavily damaged vehicle found anywhere nearby. After investigation, it was determined the first vehicle had gone off the road and into the trees lining the roadway. It then rotated back out into the traveled portion of the road and came to a rest. A second vehicle, not involved in the original incident, then crashed into the first vehicle. The 2nd vehicle remained at the scene and that driver was uninjured.
Using due diligence, personnel at the scene conducted an extensive ground search of the immediate surrounding area. Aviation was requested to assist with FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared Radar). This technology identifies heat signatures on the ground. Delaware State Police Aviation Trooper 4 responded and searched the surrounding area. Nothing was found.
Approximately one (1) hour later, Maryland State Police personnel were searching the area. They located the driver hiding in a nearby hay barn. EMS was requested as the patient had minor injuries. An ambulance from the Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad and Kent County EMS was dispatched. The patient was transported to University of Maryland - Shore Medical Center at Chestertown for evaluation and treatment. The patient’s condition and status is not known.
Maryland Department of Transportation / State Highway Administration responded to set-up a detour for an extended road closure.
