Sunday, February 7, 2021 at 9:33 am, The Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, as part of a multi-company assignment, was dispatched to the Motor Vehicle Collision with Injuries on Chestertown Road (Maryland 20) and Bell Rose Lane. At the time it was snowing moderately, and the roads were becoming slippery.
First arriving found a single vehicle crash into a utility pole. It was technically a rescue as a “door pop” was required to extricate the front seat passenger. This involved using hydraulic spreaders of our Hurst “Jaws of Life” system. Also, tree branches were removed with hydraulic cutters to facilitate access to the vehicle. Four (4) patients were transported to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown with minor injuries.
The integrity of two utility poles was severely compromised requiring the response of Delmarva Power. This required a complete closure of the road for an undetermined amount of time. As of 4:30 pm Sunday, the road has reopened. The Maryland Department of Transportation / State Highway Administration responded and assumed responsibility for the road closure, setting up detours around the incident.
