At 6:43 pm on Sunday, February 21, 2021 the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched as part of a multi-company response to the Motor Vehicle Collision with Injuries in the 9500 block of Flatland Road (Maryland 514). The crash scene was located between Stockton Startt Road and Mary Morris Road. First arriving found a two-vehicle, “Head-On” type crash with three patients. One vehicle had overturned and was laying on it’s side. Because of the serious nature of the incident, aviation had been requested.
Tragically, two of three patients were declared deceased at the crash scene. The third patient was found pinned in their vehicle with severe injuries. Using the “Rescue 42” system, our crews stabilized the overturned vehicle, then utilized our Hurst “Jaws of Life” Rescue System to free the patient.
This patient was transferred to a waiting ambulance, then transported to the helicopter landing zone located on a nearby farm. Our brush truck responded to the Landing Zone to provide for safety and security. The patient was subsequently airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland with life-threatening injuries.
The road was closed for an extended period while the Maryland State Police Crash Reconstruction Team conducted their investigation. The State Highway Administration / Maryland Department of Transportation responded and assumed responsibility for the closure and resulting detours. Our crews remained on the scene to provide flood lighting to facilitate the crash investigation.
