Chestertown Welcomes Three New Members

Wednesday, August 18, 2021

Recently, we welcomed Michael “Mike” Jacobs as an Associate Member. Mike is retired and lives on Cannon Street with his wife, Cathy. Mike enjoys activities endemic among many natives of the Eastern Shore… boating, hunting, and fishing.

As an Associate Member, Mike looks forward to helping us with the many and varied ways of supporting our operations beyond being an Active Firefighter.

Please join us in welcoming Mike as he begins the journey of being a member of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company.

At our regular meeting on Monday, August 16, 2021, we welcomed Summer Hughes as a new member. When Summer first approached us, she expressed it as her goal to become a firefighter. She is a Junior at Queen Annes County High School in Centreville, where she is enrolled in the Vo-Tech Fire & EMS (Emergency Medical Services) program. This is a cooperative program with the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute where school students are offered the opportunity to receive emergency knowledge and skills training. Upon successful completion of the vo-tech program, these young people are certified Firefighters & Emergency Medical Technicians in Maryland. Where these vo-tech programs are offered in Maryland, for Fire & Emergency Services organizations, this is a wonderful opportunity to recruit members eager to serve.

Along with her parents Brittany & John Hughes, Summer lives in Chester Harbor, just over the bridge. Summer enjoys working out, with running as her primary exercise. When not running or studying to become a Firefighter / EMT, Summer enjoys reading, and her tastes in that arena are varied.

Please join us in welcoming Summer to our ranks, and wishing her the best of luck as she embarks upon a lifetime (hopefully) of generous, and selfless Service for Others.

At our regular meeting on Monday, August 16, 2021, we welcomed William “Will” Sears as a new member. At 21, Will is a Senior at Washington College, where he is finishing his studies to graduate. In the semesters just ahead, he has just a couple of classes, occupying only a few hours… several days a week. This signals good news for us, as that promotes his daytime availability. Historically, our calls for service during the day, during the week have been a challenge where staffing is concerned.

Will comes to us from Southern Maryland, where he calls St. Leonard home. As a member of the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad & Fire Department, he brings to the table training and experience, qualities we find invaluable from the perspective of time. Once he completes our “In-House” training, he can hit the ground running. We hope he becomes an indispensable part of our daily operations.

When it comes to leisure, Will engages in some activities some would find remarkable. He likes to Skydive and enjoys Scuba Diving. He also enjoys the more sedate activities of hunting & fishing, activities found in abundance in our area. He also finds satisfaction with farming, an activity we suspect is related to his family history.

Please join us in welcoming Will to the Chestertown VFC and express our gratitude at his willingness and desire to promote our motto… “Service for Others”.
