On Monday, September 6, 2021, at 7:30 am, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad, Kent County EMS, along with multiple mutual aid companies, was dispatched for the Motor Vehicle Collision with Injuries / Entrapment at Washington Avenue (Maryland 213) and Campus Avenue. The exact location proved just south of that intersection, in the 200 block of Washington Avenue, between Kent Circle & Campus Avenue.
First arriving units found a van had overturned after striking / severing a utility pole. A single patient, with minor injuries, was still inside the vehicle. Although not “pinned”, the patient was unable to self-extricate because of the attitude of the vehicle. Prior to the arrival of Chestertown VFC Engine 6, the crew from Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad removed the windshield so the patient could safely egress.
Initially, the patient refused treatment of minor injuries. Ultimately, the patient reconsidered and decided to go. The patient was transported by Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad BLS (Basic Life Support) ambulance to the University Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown for evaluation. The condition of the patient not known as of this release.
Washington Avenue (Maryland 213) was closed for an extended time. After the utility pole was severed, the top part… with wires / cable still attached, landed on top of the vehicle. No wires were in contact with the vehicle. Removal of the utility pole was necessary before the vehicle could be righted and removed. Removal of the pole required the assistance of Delmarva Power crews & equipment. Chestertown Fire Police personnel closed the road at the beginning of the incident. Because an extended closure was anticipated, State Highway Administration – Maryland Department of Transportation was notified. They arrived and assumed responsibility for the subsequent closure and detour. (Photograph of Fire Police closure location at Washington Avenue (Maryland 213) and Kent Circle.)
