On Monday, December 26, 2022, at 12:48 am, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, along with multiple mutual aid companies, was dispatched for the structure fire in the 24300 block of Chestertown Road (Maryland 20), near Earl Nicholson Road. First arriving found a 10x10 combination outbuilding & chicken coop 100% involved with fire. The fire was near a propane tank, but that never presented a problem.
Crews proceeded to extinguish the fire and perform overhaul, the process of ensuring the fire is completely extinguished. The state fire marshal was notified but did not respond. The cause of the fire was determined as a heating lamp(s), placed in the coop for the chickens. The power company was not needed as the electric was turned off inside the house.
The response was held to units from the Chestertown VFC, Kennedyville VFC, K&QA Rescue Squad, Kent County EMS, and Kent County Fire Police (for traffic control). Also assisting were law enforcement units from the Kent County Sheriffs Office and the Maryland State Police. All other fire units were returned to their stations. There were no injuries associated with this incident.
This marked the first “working fire” for our new Rescue-Engine.
