Auto Extrication Training

Wednesday, July 23, 2025
At our bi-monthly (nominally 2nd, 4th and occasional 5th Monday of the month) company drill on June 14, 2025, members reviewed and practiced with power equipment typically used where someone is pinned. Of special importance, members worked with the hydraulic “eHurst” rescue tools. These tools are operated by heavy duty batteries, freeing the tool from being tethered by hoses to a gasoline operated compressor.
Despite inclement weather, where we trained through several downpours. In the army, and in other branches of the military, there is a favored saying… "If it ain’t raining, we ain’t training!" This training evolution certainly met that description. Not all emergencies occur during clear, dry weather. We must be ready to work, with all possible efficiency, in all types of weather.
The drill location was in the parking lot behind our fire station. The training scene was treated, as far as practical, as an actual crash scene. We used the flood light equipment, carried on Rescue – Engine 6, to illuminate the scene. A well-lit scene is infinitely safer than a darkened one.
All members, regardless of whether brand new or a little long in the tooth, had the opportunity to butcher this (donated) car for the sake of training and experience. Anyone that donates a vehicle for training purposes, we’re prepared to provide a letter, so that you may claim it for tax purposes.
