Monday, September 16, 2024, at approximately 5:43 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, along with multiple other companies, was dispatched to the Motor Vehicle Crash with Entrapment on Worton Road (Maryland 297) near Mary Morris Road. 9-1-1 callers were reporting a serious crash with at least one patient pinned. (There were only two patients, the drivers.)
First arriving, Kent County EMS Paramedic 11, found two passenger vehicles that had been involved in a “Head-On” type crash. One patient was confirmed as trapped in their vehicle. To facilitate access, packaging and removal of the entrapped patient, our Rescue-Engine 6 arrived, and using eHurst hydraulic rescue tools, removed the door of that vehicle.
Maryland State Police Aviation was requested to airlift one patient to the University of Maryland, R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Trooper 1 arrived and landed in the roadway adjacent to the crash scene. (Our Engine 6 handled Landing Zone protection and security.) Trooper 1 departed the scene at 6:23 pm with the patient on-board, bound for Shock Trauma. The second patient was transferred by land transport to the trauma center at ChristianaCare Hospital in Newark, Delaware. Kent County EMS Paramedic 13 handled this patient transfer. Conditions of both patients are not available as of this writing.
The crews from Chestertown VFC and Rescue-Engine 4 (Kennedyville VFC) assisted with traffic control and roadway clean up. Due to the excessive amounts of fluid deposited on the roadway, the Maryland State Police requested the Maryland Department of Transportation, State Highway Administration to assist with roadway clean up.
The Chestertown VFC operated at this incident for about 90 minutes.
